Thor a Terran unit

This Starcraft 2 article will feature the Thor; one of the coolest Terran unit in the game. Thor is a new heavy mechanical unit only in Starcraft 2. The Thor has many interesting roles in a Terran army. In addition, the governator impersonation of the Thor just makes this unit awesome. I will first go over a few advantages and disadvantages of the Thor and then go into Thor Strategies.

[Advantages of the Thor]

  1. Thor is a very powerful support unit. It has one of the highest damage per second unit in the game with 46.9!
  2. Thor's anti air capabilities is very powerful against light air units like mutalisk.

[Disadvantages of the Thor]

  1. Thors are expensive costing 300 minerals and 200 gas. However, you can get them relatively fast.
  2. Thors are prone to surround and focus fire because of their size and speed.
  3. Their speed and size requires enough space in open areas to be effective.
  4. Army composition should include the Thor, but never as the core composition.

[Thor Strategy]

Thor Drop Strategy:

This Thor strategy allows the Terran player to do a lot of damage to the enemy player's base in a short amount of time. This strategy is very viable on bigger maps such as desert oasis where air mobility is important. Use the medivac to drop the Thor around the mineral line and start sniping down workers. Thor has really high damage (one shot probes) and can take quite a lot of beating before a retreat. When the enemy brings their ground troop to defend their workers, pick you Thor with the Medivac. Do not try to load the Thor with the load button on the Medivac. Instead, select the Thor and right click the Medivac. The Thor drop strategy obviously requires a lot of practice and micro. You are constantly trying to do economic damage, build troops and macro, it can be difficult.

Thor's 250mm cannon strategy:

Thor's 250mm cannon is a hard to get ability because it takes a while to research and its expensive. Once you get it, you can pull off some amazing strategies that can instantly win you the game. A couple things the 250mm cannon are at. You want to use the strike cannon on expensive or game-changing units such as other Thors, Ultralisk, Immortal, Planetary Fortress or base defense. Because the ability kill an ultralisk, it is one of the only Terran counter to Ultralisk. In Starcraft 2 beta, Thor's 250mm cannon does not need to be researched actually and it stuns Ultralisk. The reason was because it was too powerful against large units. However, it is still very powerful once you acquire it, so use the Thor's 250mm cannon when you get a chance to test out new Strategies.

That pretty much covers the Thor of the Terrans and its Strategies. I am sure as Starcraft 2 evolves over time, there will be other interesting strategies with the Thor.
