Mutalisk Rush Build Order

The Muta Rush strategy is an all-in rush to Mutalisks for Zerg players in StarCraft 2. The Muta Rush is an exciting strategy with big payoffs if it works as Mutalisks can easily shut down an opponents economy and create a lot of harassment and annoyance.

[Zerg Build Order]

    • 14 Extractor (3 workers)
    • 14 Spawning Pool

    • Continue to build drones until saturation (30 drones)
    • Build Queen as soon as Lair upgrade finishes
    • Build Spire as soon as Lair upgrade finishes
    • Build Overlords such that you have enough room for mutalisks
    • Cast Inject Larva on Lair as soon as Queen finishes
    • At Spire competion, build as many Mutalisks as possible (should be 5)
    • Hatchery Expansion is recommended with excess minerals

Scouting Needs:

Optimal Map Conditions:

You need to scout their base to see if they are going for a tier 1-1.5 push on you. If you speed muta you will likely have little to no defense so quickly scouting will allow time to adjust your strategy.   Medium to large maps with a small base entrance are best. This strat takes some time to develop.

Vs Terran:

Vs Protoss:

Vs Zerg:

Good if they don't scout you and discover it early. If they can put up turrets or have a large group of marines at their mineral line you are out of luck.   Typically strong vs. protoss unless they go a mass stalker build. Early scouting to check for a cybernetics core with 3 or more gateways will typically give that strategy away.   Typically a good strat of ling to muta. Zerg lack early air defense so coming in with 6 mutalisks will quickly dispatch the queen and allow you to safely hit the drone line.

What to Watch out For:

Early scouting missions that show your strategy. Typically a Zerg player that rushes to lair is going mutalisks.Early game rush strategies as you will have to build some defense and units to fend them off while going for your build. This will slow you down, if it doesn't outright kill you.Early to Mid game armies that can fend off air easily. Mass marines, mass stalkers or an early Hydra build.

Tips for Pulling off the Attack:

Your key is to utilize your maneuverability and surprise factors. Pick off as many workers as you can before mass anti-air units arrive and focus down on small groups of anti-air units and single towers or towers being constructed. With 6 muta's you can dispatch small anti-air forces and allow your harassment to continue but you must pick and choose your fights.

Transitioning out of this Strategy:

If your harassment goes well you can continue pressing it or switch to an economic advantage and expanding. You'll need to continue to harass to keep your advantage and contain your enemy to 1 to 2 bases with minimal workers. If your harassment goes wrong then you will likely need to add defense to your base and cautiously expand so as to play catch up and get to even or better economic advantage.
